About
Peter Fry
A Bay Area-based expert witness who builds software companies for a living.
Many expert witnesses in technology either got their start in litigation consulting or stepped away from industry years ago. I did neither. Today I lead engineering and security strategy at a venture-backed company—the same kind of work I testify about. When I review source code, evaluate architecture decisions, or assess engineering practices in a dispute, I'm drawing on knowledge I use every day.
I speak the same language as the engineers whose work is at issue. I understand how modern software teams actually build, ship, and secure products—because I'm doing it right now. That firsthand experience across my 25+ years in the industry makes my analysis sharper and my testimony harder to impeach.
Years of presenting to boards of directors, collaborating with executive teams, and communicating with customers and the public have taught me how to translate complex technical concepts into clear, persuasive narratives—using analogies and storytelling to drive the point home. That skill translates directly to expert reports, depositions, and trial testimony.
Over 25 years I've held VP of Engineering, CTO, and Head of Security roles at companies backed by a16z, GV, Goldman Sachs, and others, led teams of up to 100 engineers, and founded a company that was acquired. In parallel, I've supported leading law firms—Arnold & Porter, Covington & Burling, Quinn Emanuel, Fenwick & West, Fish & Richardson, and others—across 30+ matters spanning patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, copyright disputes, software contracts, and commercial arbitration.
